Wow, she was SUPER nice and very articulate! To think they felt it was necessary to choke hold her, cover he head, restrain her arms and taze / torture the crap out of her is mindblowing disturbing!
I want to point out that even if she had not been that nice this would not have been okay.

Need to clean house at the Sheriff's Department ASAP! The video is horrifying!
Our entire office watched the full unedited video of the kind and articulate woman who was harassed and tortured by the Sheriff's Office thugs. All of us were horrified at the behavior of the officers! There is NO excuse for this brutal, angry, completely incompetent horrific behavior! The Chief saying they used minimal force is so absurd it's absolutely makes me want to vomit. I had tears in my eyes watching the torture of a completely restrained woman being treated worse than most terrorists. Get the hell into the public eye and condemn this torture in the strongest of terms and fire EVERYONE on the video and the chief immediately!
This is terrifying and we would feel safer if everyone else in the video was restrained instead OTHER than the kind woman.
Sincerely, left blank and our entire office.
Sincerely,

(6,831 posts)I hope she has a lawyer. At NO time did she engage in any treatment that required this level of abuse. At one point, there are SEVEN police officers there. There is NO justification for this.
And law enforcement wonders why people are terrified of and repulsed by cops today . . . .

(7,575 posts)have we become a police state where anyone wearing a badge can resort to this kind of police abuse? The video had me in tears. Has the mayor's office and the police department sold their hearts and souls to the devil?

(14,173 posts)And has a point. ie...she was being calm and reasonable at first. There was no need to treat her like that.
What is with it taking more than 3 hours to find out from the arresting officer the charge? She was clearly a person that had had enough. One quip about maybe she'd kill herself, or whatever she said, obviously said out of frustration as a bad joke, was the legal excuse they used to escalate their abuse against her.
Now I think she also was not smart about it. You are correct, play dumb and meek. Satisfy the cops there (not all of them) that have that need to be assured of their dominant position against you by seeing you bow to them. Just do it. It will be over sooner. And while I admire her spirit and her willingness to speak truth to power, she did push the limits. Her anger got the best of her. She was probably someone that has had very limited experience with the police and their powers. Yes, as a citizen you have rights, but once you enter the system....even as she did, in the most benign way, by refusing to sign a ticket for walking her service dog without a leash, and smoking in a no smoking area. Then there is a protocal, which may be different in various stations. In this one it was...we put you in a holding cell until the arresting officer details the charges. Presumedly to determine if the charges involve any kind of violence etc. So I can understand that policy. But WTF is it with the stewing for three hours in that cell?
I had to look up the story to find the actual charges.

But smoking and having your service dog off leash...which she insisted was allowed, should have been quickly relayed to the station, if not right when she got there. she had every reason to be upset having to wait, especially worrying about her dog who she could have used at that point. What the hell was the arresting officer doing all that time? I thought she handled herself pretty good. But things go much better if you just cooperate, and then afterwords, if needed, get a lawyer and sue. She didn't do herself any favours.

such horrendous and unprofessional behaviour.
Obviously the victim wasn't rich enough to afford more amicable treatment.
