Greta Thunberg Does the Math

"Our main enemy right now is not our political opponents. Our main enemy now is physics...and we cannot make deals with physics," Greta Thunberg told the U.S. House of Representatives in a speech during her visit to Washington, D.C. Then she explains the dire equation that the world's carbon budget is facing.

Climate Crisis is quite often underplayed or ignored out of hand here on DU. Yet, it is the issue which, unless successfully dealt with in a relative short time, will render all other concerns mute. Every political and social concern must be evaluated through the lens of Climate Crisis now, but this reality is unspoken by “leaders” and shunned by a vast segment of societies.

Thanks for sharing

. . . if we were to be fully aware and honest about it, it's really the most critically important issue facing the world. No society, no politics. In my nightmares I imagine a world that is 2c hotter. At that point, there will be few if any safe zones, and those will be occupied by the super-rich. Everyone else will suffer horribly.

Physics is the reality, humans could have adapted, politics is the cause.

I've been following environmental issues starting with the work of Jacques Cousteau for over 50 years now.
In the 80's scientists were still saying that this was an issue with impacts 300 years out, so I viewed it as a distraction from more pressing environmental issues such as persistent organic pollutants, habitat loss, and loss of endangered species.
I went to school in the 90's hoping to build a career in environmental protection, primarily from the regulatory end, but then Newt Gingrich and his Contract on America happened and I had difficulty finding work in the field. But I've continued with an interest in everything to do with the environment from the science, policy, advocacy, etc.

So I've watched closely the transition from an issue that was 300 years out to one that is less that 20. We've already blown past the WORST estimates of impacts that were to occur 300 years in the future!!

Action can not be delayed. If you support a candidate, the time is now to press them and ask how they plan to address this issue.

they release a report prior to 2003 that stated that Global Climate Disruption was a greater threat to the security of the U.S. than global terrorism.

So to me... end of story. No further discussion needed.

Will they?

Well, after 15 years of steady toil in the Environment & Energy group, my money is on "no", but I'd be happy to be proven wrong.

out a puppy video and you can get many thousands of views, hundreds of replies, and likes out the wazoo.
So once when I was posting about the plight of the vaquita, I stuck in a puppy video just to see if it would help get noticed (Not so much).

I reached out to the moderators once requesting a endangered species and climate change group but to no avail.

But I really start to lose heart when important things hardly stir a reaction here. But going back to the vaquita, even most of the major environmental groups won't touch that issue and I don't understand why. I lost respect for them as a result. I asked Sierra (says it is not a U.S. issue), Defenders of Wildlife (lady on the phone wasn't sure why, but understood why I was diverting my money), and just sent some comments to WWF because their latest "adoption gift catalog" doesn't include the vaquita, but does include cetaceans that are in a far less critical status.

So I don't know.

Since you've been at it so long, I'll mention something I'm involved in. I realized one day that feelings about the vaquita were overwhelming me and I thought that others who are closer to things that are being pushed to the side and destroyed must have similar feelings. I also realized that we didn't get to the moon because Kennedy listed all the great science we'd complete in space. Really what has to happen is people have to get past numb and be emotional about these things, to really truly FEEL what is happening. So I realized for endangered species that the best way would be an opera about the feelings involved in loss of species (low fact/high emotion). Someone put me in touch with a couple of guys in that realm of theater (I have no talent myself), but the project is starting to take form.
