which is often expensive, or requires maintenance and replacement parts.

Direct passive solar - large south facing triple glaze windows, a trombe wall and floor for energy storage, insulation, solar hot water collector, and an air circulation system can reduce energy needs by amazing amounts. And they're low tech with many decades-long serviceable lives. I think the active technology based solar energy industry is trying to weasel their way into our lives for replacement and maintenance costs just like oil, gas, electric providers always did.

If I were building a house, I'd go with passive solar for heat and cooling.
