Yep.

All that coolness was for white people.

Straight white people.

Straight white people who were comfortable with treating women like superior domestic animals.

And who thought nations populated by brown people were "underdeveloped" and "backward."

::sigh::

The "good old days".

wearily,

Blacks, who were known as "colored" were not allowed to live in my neighborhood, nor were Jews.

The University of Wisconsin was known as a "hotbed" of communism.

There were homes for unwed mothers and Catholics practiced the "rhythm" method of birth control.

DDT was sprayed from trucks to kill mosquitos -- better living through chemistry,

When Elvis appeared on the Ed Sullivan show, they never showed his gyrating hips.

The only job I could aspire to was a teacher, nurse, sales clerk or waitress.

And, I could go on..........

Oblivious to what I now know as rampant racism.
Negroes were 'obviously' lesser beings.
Not even second class citizens Like Italians, Greeks, Catholics, and Jews.

'White' and 'Colored' signs on damn near everything.
Drinking fountains, restrooms (if there WAS a 'Colored' restroom), city bus seat rows, trains waiting rooms and passenger cars, etc.

Grown black men, old men, would call me 'sir' or 'Cap'n'.
All this was just the norm.

was WAY too excited about her double oven.

I had that same oven in my second apartment and I don't remember dancing around the kitchen in an evening gown. I do, however, remember grumbling when I had to clean it with Easy Off oven cleaner. No self-cleaning ovens back then. I'm surprised I don't have some kind of COPD from the fumes.
