But he would never have gone to prison if he'd learned to keep his mouth shut about it. Jesus, you don't say anything in public or over the phone about how you plan to cash in on a product as valuable as a Senate seat. No, no, no.

You might say something like:

"This seat is priceless, you know. I mean, no-one could put a price on the value of it -- to the nation, I mean, to the Party and to the nation, and to Illinois. So it's going to be a tough, tough decision."

And if you do say something like that, those in the know will know you're feeling around for a fat bribe -- but notice that you will not have incriminated yourself. That's the way the game is played, isn't it? And that makes Blagojevich less, umm, adept at the game than his position required.

They get smug when they get a little power, these rodents, and think they're invincible. Illinois has had more than its share of corrupt politicians, but not many this dumb.
