(111,122 posts)Nursing homes are for people with serious health issues who are medically stable but beyond the ability to care for themselves and beyond the ability of their families to care for them. The typical nursing home population has many who are DNR/DNI, which means no heroics like ventilators to keep them alive. Infection in this population is going to be high and the mortality rate from it very high.
This is not going to happen in the general population of healthy adults.
ETA: I wonder if they'll ever find the person who brought it into the nursing home. That person might have had mild symptoms blown off as allergy or no symptoms at all.

The hoax is Donald j trump as president, and him telling the truth or caring about the American people. All he cares about is himself and rigging upcoming election, again.

(28,756 posts)is the way it should be. people need to know. All I want to know now is the demographic breakdown. were they all old and previously in ill health?
WA is clearly being hit hard but at least they are distributing the information they have to the people. I'm in NC with the absolutely worst republicans in the majority. 64 years old and getting spooked.

(10,749 posts)If the mortality rate is roughly 2%, as it seems to be, that would suggest that there are perhaps up to 250 cases, rather than 18.
Then you have to ask if it's reasonable or correct to assume that the number of cases out there is 14 times greater than that being reported. And in the absence of trustworthy information from the government, people will draw their own conclusions, and the chances are that ordinary folks are going to err on the side of "everything's just fine." Because most people are not going to make their way to numerous websites to gather all the info they need or want, or, for that matter, deserve.
https://heavy.com/news/2020/01/coronavirus-cases-us-map-wuhan/ reports up to 60 cases under examination right now. Using my purely speculative number above, that might suggest that are upwards of 800+ cases.

(28,756 posts)and i think the deaths are mostly associated with an extended care home. WA is clearly being hit hard with this virus.
