(6,831 posts)but the ASL interpreter by Jay's left side is simply one of THE best I've ever seen. By keeping his "window" small and tight, I was able to catch most of what he was Signing. When the information you have to translate includes so much medical terminology, it can be overwhelming for the eye to read, but this gentleman was extraordinary.

(6,831 posts)Thirty years ago, I obtained a degree in ASL/Deaf Studies at Ohlone College in Fremont, CA. But as with any language, if you don't use it, you lose proficiency, and I haven't had anyone to Sign with in a long time. I try to keep my Signing up, even if it's just around the house. But I just noticed that his window was so tight that everything flowed, making it easier to "read" him.
Oh, and by the way, you are a "hearie" not a "hearer" as The Deaf qualify it.
I think everyone should learn some ASL. Much of it is intuitive, so you'll already understand the words. I taught my spouse a number of words/phrases, so we could communicate across a crowded room/when family was present/and in other situations where we needed to communicate, but didn't want everyone to know what we were discussing. That and learning any language builds bridges of communication -- always a good thing. There are always community courses available to learn.
