(3,626 posts)I wish I could have seen a real audience react to that. On one hand Bill is right about diseases often being named for their point of origin, and China's culpability for letting the wet markets flourish. But on the other it's obvious Trump wants to use "Chinese virus" as a racist dog whistle. I suspect the actual scientists didn't go for point of origin because by the time they realized they needed a more specific name than "new coronavirus" it had spread far beyond its origin, and had they named it for its point of origin they would have almost certainly named it for Wuhan rather than the entire country.
