(12,712 posts)You would have thought that the real threat to this country would have been an obvious, foreign enemy. Well, that seems to be on the sidelines for now; a maybe.
What the real threat seems to be is a rash of gullibility, instability, delusional thinking, droves of conspiracy theories and an Administration and a RW propaganda machine that encourages it, exacerbates it, inflames it, etc.
Some people are easily manipulated or influenced. They may look to their leaders to get their bearings and direction and even their role models. That's just the way it is. It is a lazy and easy way, (and I think obsolete way) to not think for yourself and yet, believe you are doing just that. I look at this Administration and the GOP and I see that they are exploiting this weakness and the confusion of certain groups of people to the fullest extent and that will result in repercussions as dangerous as a salvo of missiles.
I can see not checking facts due to the time it takes, but there are some trustworthy fact checkers who do that and make the information, (and sources/citations) available. I can see having many psychological, pathological needs being met by what conspiracy theories have to offer, (although they, in themselves are becoming THE conspiracy as they are used to manipulate believers now). I can see being told what to think, but not knowing HOW to think. I can't see an advanced, technological culture surviving long if all those factors are going to infest and infect our politics while not being addressed by leaders rather than being a means of exploitation.
We are pretty much imploding and the virus has lit the fuse. How do you come to terms with that? It is one thing to have a totally corrupt Administration and Senate eating away at our system, it is quite another to have a large segment of a society acting out of fealty to them and turning on those who are not doing that and could be beneficial in regards to resolving these problems and setting us on a beneficial course for all.
