(4,312 posts)Abraham Ribicoff gave a speech to nominate Eugene McCarthy. He was the one who denounced the Chicago police for their overreaction to the protests and the dissent inside the Convention. I believe he was the one who spoke of Gestapo tactics and storm troopers in blue.

He might have been injured badly, or even killed, except some people around a corner on a balcony reached out and pulled him up to safety. He was not any kind of a hippie or left-winger; he was conventionally dressed with a conventional haircut. He was just a standard nerd, trying to get home from a museum. I can't remember the name of the politician who stood at the podium of the Democratic National Convention and bravely denounced the out-of-control police mob. He called them "storm troopers in blue" and got booed by the right wingers of the Democratic party. Yes, we had them, back then. The switch between the two parties was not yet complete. Mayor Daley was red in the face as he bellowed with his crew.

(4,312 posts)US Senator from Connecticut? He gave a speech to nominate Senator Eugene McCarthy, right? And I think he denounced the "storm troopers in blue" and said President McCarthy would not allow "gestapo tactics."
