I was thinking more along the lines of what Rhodes got caught saying about his own supporters in the movie:

5. Trump is grateful for one thing: those who idolize him. He doesn't despise his followers.

He called Alex Jones of Infowars a day after the election to express gratitude and asking to extend that gratitude to his listeners, that without them, a Trump presidency wouldn't be possible.
Trump shares a lot with Lonesome Roads, but not the self-loathing.

but Howard Stern recently made a comment about trump (I guess they were somewhat friendly back in the old days when he was a frequent guest?) and it made me think otherwise:

“The oddity in all of this is the people Trump despises most, love him the most,” said Stern on Tuesday. “The people who are voting for Trump, for the most part … He wouldn’t even let them in a f*cking hotel. He’d be disgusted by them. Go to Mar-a-Lago, see if there’s any people who look like you. I’m talking to you in the audience.”
