On a number of occasions over the years, I have heard any number of younger gay men who weren't yet born when Stonewall occurred make negative comments about trans people participating in Gay Pride marches. These young men have thought that it was trans people were "holding the gay rights movement back." And whenever I have heard that, I remind them that the patrons of the Stonewall were not the neatly coiffed, smartly dressed and perfectly built young men with corporate jobs that we see so much of today. I remind them that the patrons were mostly a combination of hustlers, trannies (as they were then called) and drag queens -- marginalized people who, unlike corporate queers, had nothing to lose -- and that every LGBTQ person now living owes a debt of gratitude to them!
