...if he drops out after he gets the nomination? Johnson did this in March '68, so there was plenty of time before the convention to build up Hubert Humphrey. There's no way in hell they'll be able to convince him to drop out before the convention in August. He doesn't give a rat's ass about the health of this country, so trying to convince him to quit for the good of the country will fall on deaf ears. He's never been a good enough salesman to sell the "have to get back to running my business" line of bullshit, and we know he doesn't want to spend time with his family. Well, maybe Ivanka. He needs that adoration, so no way he's not going to be there for his ordination. My guess is he's going to proclaim it the "Trump Party", and dare the "establishment" to take him down. He'll split the party wide open, and blame his historical defeat on...something. After he declares the election rigged and tries to have it negated, or course.

Rethugs are really sweating their own re-elections. They know they've attached themselves to a loser and he's going to drag them down with him. That also includes his cabinet. Power is quite "heady". Right now, they've got it, and don't want to lose it. Hell, they can't lose it...most of them would wind up in jail. I wouldn't be even a little surprised if by now and November they discover the 25th Amendment. They'll stop denying his obvious mental decline, claim the stress of the job made it impossible for him to continue, and sell Pence as the person to continue the programs, but with more stability. And (hopefully) still get their asses handed to them.

He'll resign rather than work with Democrats during a transition period. He'll be counting on a pardon for himself and his rotten family from Pence, resigning after he signs Pence's pardon.

LBJ refused to run for reelection, he didn't resign anything. He knew after the Tet disaster that the generals had all been lying to him about the war and he knew his chances for reelection were slim to none because of his bad decisions based on a pack of lies from McNamara and other hawks.

I don't see him leaving before the election unless it's feet first.

There are multiple possible scenarios, all different, even inconsistent, but each requires him to pick it and stick to it for it to work. I don't know if I believe he can do that.
