Before militarization of police departments? Military background/training of police?

The police presence in some shots is quite prominent. But not as menacing as in videos taken today

The only time I recall seeing a lot of long guns was when the National Guard was called out back in those days. Probably a good thing the first Mayor Daley or Sheriff Jim Clark didn't have tanks.

3. He really had it in for students

The 68 dem convention is always discussed as if it were a total riot

But the riot wasn't in the convention. It was out in the streets, where Daley's cops were beating anyone that even vaguely looked as if they might be a student or connected with a college or university

Cops even pursued people into hotel lobbys with billy clubs and tear gas
