Timothy Snyder, Author of 'On Tyranny' Rachel Maddow MSNBC; Activism To Save US Democracy

- American Activism Is Best Hope To Save U.S. Democracy From Trump | Rachel Maddow | MSNBC, Jul 24, 2020

Timothy Snyder, author of "On Tyranny," and Yale historian talks with Rachel Maddow about how Donald Trump's actions echo the behavior of governments that slip away from democracy and into authoritarianism. https://www.timothysnyder.org/

The Founding Fathers tried to protect us from the threat they knew, the tyranny that overcame ancient democracy. Today, our political order faces new threats, not unlike the totalitarianism of the twentieth century. We are no wiser than the Europeans who saw democracy yield to fascism, Nazism, or communism. Our one advantage is that we might learn from their experience. TIMOTHY SNYDER, ON TYRANNY

6. Be wary of paramilitaries. When the men with guns who have always claimed to be against the system start wearing uniforms and marching around with torches and pictures of a Leader, the end is nigh. When the pro-leader paramilitary and the official police and military intermingle, the end has come.

This is pretty much what I hear every time I see him. I take no comfort from it. ancianita Jul 2020 #6
I don't think it's intended to be comforting. soldierant Jul 2020 #7

I don't think they do a great job at uploading these segments, many end too soon or start part way through. I often look for something I've seen on MSNBC and the interview or host statement is incomplete.

in this interview:

Trump’s Occupation of American Cities Has Begun

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/20/opinion/portland-protests-trump.html

“This is a classic way that violence happens in authoritarian regimes, whether it’s Franco’s Spain or whether it’s the Russian Empire,” said Snyder. “The people who are getting used to committing violence on the border are then brought in to commit violence against people in the interior.”

Timothy Snyder's book Bloodlands is monumental; I can't recommend it highly enough.

I would have shrugged it off as patently ridiculous. But then he's Fred Trump's son and Putin's lil bro.
