before we reach "herd immunity"!

70 percent is the number needed to reach herd immunity.

320,000,000 x .7 = 224,000,000

224,000,000 / 40,000,000 (estimated actual infections) = 5.6

150,000 x 5.6 = 840,000 (death rate extrapolated to the 224M needed).

840,000 - 150,000 = 690,000 estimated number of new deaths required to reach herd immunity

Herd immunity achieved*

*assumes that having Covid-19 instills some sort of longer term immunity if an individual survives - so far the evidence for this is mixed.
