Sometimes they just get silly. I'm sure the writers saw all the stuff being posted out on the internet and social media, in real time, and the Goldblum remake of "The Fly" was an obvious choice to include in the skit.

And it does speak to where we are on this election. What people remember most about the one and only vice presidential debate, which should have been controversial with Pence's interruptions and ignoring the questions - was that fly! You're right, this was just made for SNL!
