pneumonia is not something that you bounce back from after a few days. It takes a while before you are back up normal.

Like a monster in its death throes... the synapses are firing, the body is flailing without a conscious purpose... the cortex is limited to its basic subconscious and instinctive will to survive and escape danger. The monster struggles violently and in great pain... but it doesn't realize that it's already dead. The fight is over --- except for watching it twist, contort and writhe in physical and emotional agony.
