Monologue: From Flu to CoupBill recaps the top stories of the week, including Donald Trump's refusal to accept the reality of his defeat.
How to Defeat the Trump Insurgency
Max Brooks and Caitlin Flanagan join Bill to discuss how Democrats can win over Trump loyalists and build political power through the next election.
New Rule: Strife of the Party
Bill implores Democrats to use common sense and tone down the hypersensitive wokeness that drove voters to Trump.
On edit: Here's a "bootleg" version of the show for anyone who really wants to see the initial guest, Jenna Ellis, Senior Legal Adviser for the Trump 2020 campaign. There's also more with the panel. It won't last long, as usual:

(205,233 posts)She was so odious that I guess they decided not to upload the interview, "legal adviser for the Trump campaign." Bill did a decent job of taking on her nonsense, but - like so many of Trump's surrogates - she just kept talking over him and didn't actually address his questions. She was really tough to take.

(205,233 posts)He did as well as could be expected, but she didn't respond to anything he said, just kept going with her prepared speech. She reminded me of spokesperson Huckabee, only less sympathetic and likable.

(51,584 posts)I turned her off twice, hoping she'd be OK after a few minutes to calm down...NOPE! Didn't work. That non-human mouth piece is utterly repulsive and I almost threw my tablet into the wall, twice. I don't need to give her a third try.
Rhiannon12866
(205,233 posts)I could feel my blood pressure rising and I'm normally borderline low. There was no dialog, she had her marching orders and just never shut up. She was actually a replacement for the originally scheduled Trump campaign spokesperson, I'm guessing she was first string since she got every word of her message in whether it made actual sense, or not. Did you notice that at the end she mentioned the Constitution??

(51,584 posts)I decided to drive bamboo under my fingernails for a better experience this evening.
Rhiannon12866
(205,233 posts)And he's had some real winners, but usually they get pushback from the rest of the guests. This one had a pulpit and used it, not that she managed to convince any of Bill's usual audience - unless Trump himself was watching.

(63,221 posts)see what the train wreck had to say anyway. At least for a few minutes. Loved Max, as usual. Thanks for posting, Rhiannon!

(47,399 posts)She is absolutely awful. All scripted talking points and no listening.
Rhiannon12866
(205,233 posts)There are a few I couldn't stand, but she was probably the most offensive. Like you said, she wasn't there to listen or participate, just spout off her talking points.
PatSeg
(47,399 posts)she was as bad as Kellyanne when she appeared on Real Time years ago. That fake smile and all scripted talking points. Not one original idea or comment. All they do is filibuster and run out the clock. Why did she bother going on Maher's show in the first place? She wasn't going to change anyone's mind and she was probably making Trump's position worse.

(14,570 posts)Yes, she was odious, and Bigman Pigman's statement on bamboo under the fingernails for a more enjoyable evening is hilarious.
BUT...
OANN, QAnon, Breitbart, and the kajillion AM hate-talk radio stations spout this shit nonstop 24/7/365, and have for decades - enough to thoroughly brainwash about 40 million Americans. There was good discussion about how to begin reversing this.
Maher's New Rules was OK - common sense is good, and there are many, many people in our tent who are FAR too sensitive about politically incorrect things. Maher's examples were OK. I can think of more, like the college where a conservative speaker was slated to come in, and they had a 'safe room' and therapy dogs ready for students who were 'shaken' by that. Come on, folks.
But AOC also had some very good points, as well as Bernie, who I saw today on Chris Hayes. We need to WORK at this, particularly in those rust belt areas that were decimated by NAFTA and who turned right at Reagan. Working people should be Democrats, and we need to win them back. This means deep canvassing (AOC's term) about racism and other issues in Mid-Western states.
Also a good idea to identify winning issues. We have three winning issues says Maher: Healthcare, minimum wage and marijuana. I'd add in childcare availability, education, and help for small businesses to stay afloat, getting the pandemic under control. And racial justice. That is a winning issue, as well, as we have seen just now, with over 75 million people voting on it - but again, as AOC has said, we need to do some deep canvassing on that issue, and other kitchen table issues. All through the USA.
We didn't flip any state legislatures, lost seats in the House, and did not easily flip the Senate.
And, LAST THING - we need a new Fairness Doctrine. I have long said so, but recently found out that the Fairness Doctrine was set in place in the late 1940s to ensure that America would never fall prey to the kind of big lie propaganda Goebbels seduced Germans with. Bet you can guess who killed it. Ronald Reagan, in 1987, saying government is not the solution, it is the problem.
That is another thing we need to reverse - that Reagan saying. That's got to go. There is a role for government and a reason for taxes and we need to stop soft-pedaling that and talking about tax cuts. We've had too many tax cuts and all the Republican ones from Reagan on need to be reversed so we can get corporations and billionaires to pay their fair share.

(8,282 posts)Coming from the midwest, this hate came from Limbaugh and Reagan. Remember welfare queens driving the Cadillac?
For republicans that hate government, they sure know how to get elected and destroy what is good government.
Minimum wage? How can a new business survive if it has to pay minimum wage?
Stop funding the police? Who are you going to call when there's an emergency?
I've heard all of the excuses and we need to stop what isn't working.
Maher was particularly grumpy tonight after our huge win. He didn't celebrate it at all from what I saw on these clips.
I don't know about you but I'm stoked that 45 is history and we can heal now.

I enjoyed Max; always do. Their conversations were interesting. And, "New Rules"...YES! YES! YES!

(63,221 posts)She was a nightmare! What a waste of oxygen. How does Trump manage to find the dumbest people on the face of the earth to go to bat for him? It's so counterproductive. She could not have made a better argument against him.
I enjoyed Max as well. I always like seeing him on the show.
Behind the Aegis
(53,951 posts)How the HELL do people like that get access to power? It is beyond frightening. She was even more repulsive than the press secretary and that is saying something...bad!
smirkymonkey
(63,221 posts)The one good thing is that when he is gone, they are gone. We will not ever have to put up with these gaslighting, lying POS's ever again.
Rhiannon12866
(205,233 posts)For anyone who really wanted to see the initial guest. I told you she was insufferable. She had her act down and talked over Bill and his questions. He's had guests on before that I thought I couldn't stand to listen to, but I think this one was the worst. She was like previous spokesperson Huckabee on steroids - only she smiled through her entire diatribe.
smirkymonkey
(63,221 posts)She was a nightmare! One good thing about Trump being gone is that we won't have to put up with these freaks and liars any longer. It's just too bizarre. They are such gaslighters. I don't know how these people live with themselves. Anyway, I hope we never ever have to hear from her again. Bill did a pretty good job of knocking her down.
Rhiannon12866
(205,233 posts)I wonder if the guy who they originally had scheduled would have been any different? This one is apparently a "senior" member of that cabal. Bill made a valiant effort to ask serious questions, but she just kept up her diatribe and talked right over him, it was like someone wound her up. He's had guests on before that I thought I couldn't stand, but this one wins, hands down!
smirkymonkey
(63,221 posts)I wanted to punch my computer screen! What a nightmare! I can't wait until all these people are unemployed and begging on the streets. Who in their right minds would ever hire such unethical, disgusting people?
Rhiannon12866
(205,233 posts)Did you catch her air of superiority when she told Bill that she didn't answer to "the people," but only to Trump personally as adviser to "his campaign" - and that she'd just been talking with him in the White House! She makes Sarah Huckabee look sympathetic, warm and friendly!
Rhiannon12866
(205,233 posts)She just kept up her spiel no matter what Bill asked or said - and he was way too polite. I agree that she was even worse than Huckabee or the insufferable talking head he has now.
But I was also looking forward to Max Brooks, he's always the best, both smart and funny, too!

(205,233 posts)But she leaves them all in the dust. She had her "talking points," ignored his questions and kept on her superior smile throughout the entire exchange!
I really liked the panel, though. Max Brooks is always a favorite guest, both smart and funny! No surprise since he's Mel Brooks' son!
