One of the best foreign films I've ever seen was Iranian: Darius Mehrjui's Hamoun.
The protagonist was a failed writer, in a depressed post-war Tehran, going through a messy divorce. Very existential.
These are a few scenes from the movie - although the score was an arrangement of the Adagio from Bach's Violin Concerto in E.

I didn't find a free version online, sadly - but if you feel like getting a copy on e-Bay or Amazon, I recommend it.
