He ran out of options, finally sold his father's once-successful company for much less than it was worth, he only had his "name" to sell, but we know what happened with Trump steaks, Trump vodka and especially Trump University. I believe he ran as another money-making scheme, never wanted the job, never expected to "win," and he hasn't done it - assigned various duties to unqualified cronies like Jared - but he's found his calling by constantly holding "rallies" and continuing to collect even more donations.
