(70,295 posts)Trump farewell rally & departure via Air Force One: Theres no crowd at all here. This might be the smallest Trump rally ever.
Event was called for audience arrival by 7:15 am.
As of 7:35 am, many more flags than spectators.

(2,065 posts)The pandemic came in an election year. And when push came to shove, it was all about Donald Trump and his own reelection - and nothing about the American people, who were suffering and dying from this viral disease in record numbers. If Trump had done a halfway decent job of handling the pandemic, he could well have won re-election - heck, but to do that, he would have at least had to stop lying, which I don't think he is capable of doing.
He would have won re-election easily if he handled the pandemic semi-competently and kept the economy in check.

(27,635 posts)After departing the White House for the last time, outgoing President Donald Trump's farewell speech at Joint Base Andrews was notable for lacking the one thing that he has long craved: large crowds.
The small crowd, which included first lady Melania Trump and most of his family members, was subdued and a far cry from the raucous rallies that defined his turbulent presidency.
CNN's Jim Acosta noted that the attendees that were present were "definitely the smallest crowd size of the Trump presidency," a stark contrast to the huge crowds that aided in his ascendency to the presidency four years ago.
Atendees waved flags and cheered as Trump spoke, but as he gave a rambling speech boasting about poll numbers and the accomplishments of his administration, the spark that created his MAGA movement seems to have gone out.

(14,529 posts)The Guardian had a great headline about the inauguration "A dull yet competent plea for unity". I think people long for dullness.
When I was watching the inauguration yesterday I was thinking - yeah it is a historic first - the first female, black, Asian vp. Yes, Biden seems off to a promising start..etc etc.
But what I was really registering was "All of these people are so NORMAL". I was remembering Trump's chilling speech from years ago. It reeked of a mob boss taking over - all his own kids and his sycophants in the background...nightmarish. This was the opposite.
But I do want to watch Trump's farewell.

(27,635 posts)And there was a 21 gun salute with army field guns. He had to order these things himself. The Pentagon refused to coordinate a traditional military farewell tribute to the outgoing Commander in Chief.
ETA: Here is what Obama's Armed Forces Farewell Ceremony looked like:

(25,533 posts)The one that you linked (honor ceremony..the one that Trump did not get)
Obama also had a send off on January 20th, after he was no longer president.
On Jan 20th 2017: Obama had the AF band, red carpet and military guards. However, it also resembled Trump's in that is was more casual. Obama gave a peppy speech. (The military did not speak) Michelle was with him. They did not play hail to the chief.

(205,927 posts)Trump's got all his kids lined up there, but he appears to be missing. And for a kid in The White House, we never hear about him. Isn't he going with them? When Obama's second term was over, the Obamas stayed in D.C. so that Sasha could finish school there. Is Barron going to be forced to change schools in the middle of the year? Whatever happens, it's going to be rough on the poor kid.

(6,265 posts)it's the nightmare you put together that has culminated in an insurrection, a god awful coup d'etat attempt of our democracy. You wanted racial/cultural division. 5 dead many injured, assassins looking for prominent leaders of our democracy, both Republican and Democrat. Over 400,000 needless deaths from the ongoing and mutating pandemic, more than likely 500,000 by the end of this month. NIGHTMARE and death. That's what trump et al created for Americans. Millions out of work, millions of children out of school, millions of Covid survivors with lingering symptoms of the virus. In some cases not ever going away...
Glad we have a POTUS again.
