According To History, The Only Time An Outgoing Leader Doesn't Stick Around To Greet The Incoming

...leader is when the outgoing leader has just been DEPOSED in DISGRACE.

Nice example from 'Waterloo' (1970). Observe King Louis XVIII (Orson Welles) pissing off like greased lightning, before Napoleon (Rod Steiger) arrives at the palace to depose him. The advantage of doing this, of course, is that you can still order all the pomp and ceremony for yourself (carriages, bands, honor guards), rather than have the new ruler take your crown, and then kick you into the dumpster behind the palace.

Trump is the only U.S. President in over a century to pull a Louis XVIII.
