(7,579 posts)The bible holds no significance to me. It would be no difference if I was to swear on a roll of toilet paper.
She misses the whole point of it in her obvious stupid bias.
Why would you have someone swear in on something that had ZERO meaning to them?
If the whole point is to have something that keeps you honest (rolls eyes), and if you really think "other" religions are so fanatical why not use whatever book makes sense to use?

(8,912 posts). . . (1) there is nothing in our laws that requires swearing on a bible, (2) the Constitution forbids any kind of religious test for public office, and (3) swearing on a bible means absolutely nothing if the book has no religious significance to the person taking the oath, there remains a problem with what the Bible itself says about taking oaths in the first place!
Matthew 5:34-37:
" But I say to you, Do not swear at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. Let your word be Yes, Yes or No, No; anything more than this comes from the evil one.["
James 5:12
"Above all, my beloved, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your Yes be yes and your No be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation. "
This woman is too stupid to be a dog catcher, let alone a member of Congress!

(20,870 posts)An oath of affirmation (or something like that) will suffice.
Nothing in our government requires a bible.
