This is wonky but it's a fantastic explanation of our politics and especially what's going on in the Senate. The title is no exaggeration. Well worth the time. Democracy is on the line. Dems need to go big or go home.

(43,303 posts)Their Manchin and Sinema talk is enlightening.
Liberals got Trump mediated through liberal media and so mostly got the outrageous and racist rifts without getting the rest of the context that his followers got.
6 years of no legislation makes it hard for people to believe that ANY party can get things done
Certainly not for lack of trying on our part, and we knew we'd be judged for not delivering, and people didn't care how hard that was in the obstruction and constraints of the do-nothing opponents
Moderates have been a drag on the party, too, and were kicked out by those who don't buy the excuse of taking half of what they want.
Klein dodges the Manchin/Sinema question about what Schumer should do, proving he knows just how difficult senators' work is.
Democrats are honest and if they're unanimously united, they are noticed. When they do what works, and not what they did before.
The only way to keep out the obstructionists is to give the people what you campaigned on, or you're out.
They're right -- the Lucy and the Football dynamic is real. It is no longer important to have minority input in bills and the filibuster makes bipartisanship worse, and kills compromise and incentivizes sabotage.
After our huge strides are cockblocked by Manchin, Sinema and Feinstein, we won't be back.
Being behind the 8 ball means Dems have to work harder as if they don't have 41 million more represented than Repubs. If Dem reps were proportional they'd have 8 more congress persons.
OTOH, Manchin is the divisive idiot who will keep the party from winning again. OTOH, Manchin's incentive is to work to get stuff done, so that even if he loses next time, you at least did a lot of good for people.
Expanding the budget reconciliation boundaries by Harris' overruling points of order on 51 votes is a great rube goldberg idea to end legislation gridlock.
They can let HR1 and SB1 be filibustered so they can nuke it over the horror the public sees.
To get stuff done simple, fast and big is to not let corporations be your middleman.
And to toot their own party horn louder than their opponents do.
The vaccine rollout is their first Big Damn Deal to crow about.
And it announces this: Big Fucking Deal Government is BACK.
It better use its accomplishments to beat the structural trends and win in 2022.
Because Democracy is the only way to have a civilized society.
Fuck decorum. Help people by any means necessary.

(9,814 posts)the other thing I finally learned from this is what Bernie's plan to beat the filibuster was-- do everything through budget reconciliation even if it's not budget related. If they object, Kamala can decide in our favor!

(9,814 posts)in coming elections than they already do due to their natural advantage (the way each state gets 2 Senators and voter suppression laws). I don't know exactly why they will have an easier time (they should be forever tainted by Trump) but it's terrible if true.

(43,303 posts)Add to that the upcoming census count that will give more reps to GA and TX by 2022, along with renewed gerrymandering power. The census was an incompetent sham, and to bring in a new state might renew a call for another census update count.
