I don't think most epidemiologists would agree. This bug validated the term 'super spreader' -- and made it's way around the world in relatively short order. Without defending the Trump administration (that deserves almost none) -- I believe the nature of the world today, and it's porous population, made that spread almost an inevitability. It's easy to talk drastic measures -- but I'm not sure how well they fit with that current mold and mindset. And -- we also got lucky with the vaccines -- actually coming on board far earlier than we first thought possible.

If you look at the past, something like this was coming and it was predictable. Bill Gates predicted it. Obama predicted it. Biden predicted it. Even George W. Bush, for all of his flaws, saw that something like this was coming.

What makes this such a colossal fuck up is that we had a president who didn't give a shit and made a bad situation that much worse. We had safeguards in place, a national PPE stockpile, and teams all over the world researching viruses that had pandemic potential.

Obama even left Trump a playbook on how to deal with a national or global pandemic should one happen. Shit, we even had a team in China, in Wuhan, researching bat coronaviruses in 2018! And Trump fired them and shut down the research facility!

Trump threw all of that shit out the window and that made this that much worse. The consolation prize we got was that we don't have to put up with a second term of his nonsense.

We were also lucky that we dodged the "big one" that the WHO says is coming, which, I seriously hope will be none of our concern.
