(90 posts)Whether one likes or dislikes him, or agrees or disagrees with him, is irrelevant. Hannity is an entertainer, masquerading as a journalist. His show is intended to generate viewership and listeners for his programs, so that Fox News and others can charge advertisers and turn a profit for their shareholders. Everything he does is calculated for maximum effect and maximum response. He sells a narrative, people buy it, and Fox News shareholders make a profit. It is the way.
Sean Hannity is a product, and it appears he is selling well. I imagine he has a net worth of at least a couple of hundred million dollars. He is many things, but he isn't dumb. One must be careful not to underestimate ones opponent.

(90 posts)But he is doing what he is paid, quite handsomely, to do. He generates controversy, which brings in listeners/viewers, which brings in advertisers revenue. As long as people talk about Sean Hannity he will continue to make money.

(1,668 posts)When people complain about professional sports salaries I think of guys like Hannity. He may be smarter than trump, certainly his distortions seem more purposeful, but he doesnt strike me as academically smart. I think your point here is that he is playing his character at this point and not understanding is how the character would respond. So yes, he is an incredibly skilled manipulates. I pity his family.

(14,529 posts)This is probably at the root of a lot of social evils. That living by your wits in this manner is considered being a success.
What you are describing is a successful charalatan. Any skilled manipulator of human foibles is smart by those standards. A lot of people with similar levels of information or ability could do what this person does. They probably don't because it is icky.
It takes a lot of shameless obliviousness to practice what I take to be a combination of elaborate self-deception and conniving scheming. To mostly deliberately exploit a lot of people who take you at face value is certainly cunning. It is hardly even street smart let alone intelligent. It is simply some sort of pathology that more straight-forward people lack.
And Hannity is not the only successful member of our idiotic society who lives by his wits. Some of them even have a few attributes commonly associated with higher intelligence such as the ability to retain many facts in their long term memories, reason logically etc. But they are adventurers much like Hannity and it is even more lame. Look at all those extremely wealthy, powerful and sleazy industrialists who purvey parasitic and worthless, tacky surveillance capitalism and the equally parasitic small business creeps who copy their methods.
No one expects anything better from Hannity.
