(3,764 posts)In 1492 Columbus came to the island of Hispaniola. He and his men killed most of the Arawak inhabitants and enslaved the rest. When they ran out of iArawaks to enslave they started bringing Africans they bought or captured in Africa.

(16,919 posts)Because of their purchasing power, there are 2 states that pretty much determine what is found in textbooks. California and Texas have "boards" that approve what textbooks are used in state schools. Publishing companies have to have "board approval" to sell textbooks in those states and that approval is what determines how "history" is presented.
If it's good enough for Texas it has to be fine for the rest!

EXHIBIT #1 - Electing Donald Trump as President

(17,884 posts)American ignorance of history, particularly our own...I can only shake my head, why? In arguable the most technologically advanced nation on earth. It's a crime. An absolute crime.
Her last name reminded me of this "cuddly", old fellow. Edmund Ruffin. Avowed super racist, slave owner, secessionist before secession was cool in Virginia, but also one of the pioneering soil scientists and conservationists in America. In fact, he's known by many as the "father of soil science." Credited as firing the first cannon shot at Ft. Sumter. Once the war was lost, he took his own life rather than live under the rule of, as he called it, "the vile Yankee race." Substitute Democrat for Yankee and he'd feel right at home in the 21st century reich wing.

(16,919 posts)especially the "taking his own life rather than live under the rule of, as he called it, 'the vile Yankee race'" part.
Change the words 'vile Yankee' to 'winning Democrats' and let's see how far we can go with it!

(603 posts)so yes we need a white history month so we can learn history as it was from the side of the descendants of those enslaved...and just how many residential schools who kidnapped and abused the children of indigenous peoples...because we haven't even scratched the surface.
Thank you.
