Ravens were the companions of Woden, the allfather of the first monarchs of Britain, the Anglo-Saxon dynasty. Pre Conquest ravens were the monarch's guardians and contact with Dad. Harming or losing them could bring about the downfall. This belief never quite went away.

Ravens are highly intelligent and do seem to recognize death.
