(206,589 posts)It's obvious that the Bidens love those dogs - unlike a certain senator who shall not be named.

(11,686 posts)Champ looks beautiful. He also looks like a 12 year old German Shepherd. Along with having German Shepherds I was a dog groomer for 11 1/2 years and he looks like he should. If kelly thinks Champ looks a little "disheveled" that is because Champ has that German Shepherd's short hair with a thick undercoat.
Rhiannon12866
(206,589 posts)He's obviously had the best care and is very much loved.

(266 posts)I'm pretty sure Champ is not 12, but 14.
Rhiannon12866
(206,589 posts)So that would make him 12 now. And that still is a respectable age for a German Shepherd, he's obviously had good care.

Champ
Joe Biden promised his wife he would purchase a dog after the 2008 presidential election should Barack Obama manage to win the race.[8] Jill Biden taped different pictures of dogs on seats of Biden's campaign plane for him to see.[9] He purchased the dog as a puppy from a breeder in Pennsylvania, and it was named Champ (born October 2008) by his granddaughters. Champ's name reminded Biden of advice given to him by his father who said, "Any time you get knocked down, champ, get up!"[5][10] Joe Biden has an affinity for German shepherds, having trained them in the past.[9] Biden would give children small plush toys of Champ during his vice presidency.[7]

(8,620 posts)And with that thick double coat, it is almost impossible to keep it looking smooth and brushed anyway. My Sasha had exactly that same kind of coat. Now Major has a beautiful, smooth coat to begin with, but he's going to look a mess when he blows his coat too because that's what happens. His coat is much like my Aria, who is currently blowing her coat in hair chunks all over everything.
Doreen
(11,686 posts)My Schultz did that too. No matter how much you brushed. My other GSD was a long hair and she did not have an undercoat.
Delarage
(2,186 posts)The undercoat is for real....every now and then I'd reach a point where I would decided to eradicate all the hair in the house. I brushed her, vacuumed her, bathed her. Vacuumed/dusted the entire house, did laundry. Vacuumed the car.
By the next day, it was as if I had never cleaned the house. Ever.

(34,517 posts)Everyone with older pets knows you indulge them a bit because you want them to be happy. If they dont want as much grooming as a young pup, theyve earned the right to relax.
Not well cared for? You idiots are confusing The Bidens with the cruel and neglectful Cruz family. And probably your own families

(18 posts)So they are griping about superfluous things. First they came for Joe and Jills relationship, now they are after the first dog. The Republicans andConservative Commentators realize how popular the Presidents platform is on both sides of the aisle. I guess I would prefer their inane whining about nothing as a distraction, especially if it means we can get our legislative priorities passed

(17,170 posts)It's a grief-filled time during any dog-lover's life; it's the loving responsibility of every dog-lover when the time comes.
It will be hard on the Bidens; it will be hard on the nation to have to share in Champ's demise.
I know this time will be approached with love, care, and dignity by Joe, Jill, and the First Family.
Leave The President, the First Lady, and the First Dog alone to live out their lives together in peace.

No, not meant to make sense.

(206,589 posts)But in Cruz's case, he was attacked for abandoning his dog, the last thing that the Bidens have ever done. They love and cherish both pets. When he was VP, Biden gave out tiny replicas of Champ to kids.

(14,649 posts)My guess is that most of them have never had a pet that lived much past middle-aged.
Many of our pets now are over 14. The dogs wouldn't win any beauty contests. One of them has some ugly skin tags that the vet doesn't find necessary to risk sedating her to remove. The other one has so much grey on his muzzle, that he almost looks like Ted Cruz.
One of our old cats, now gone, had a hematoma removed from his ear. It left that ear a bit wrinkled looking. In his youth, he was strikingly beautiful. The oldest cat now is close to 18 and looking a bit saggy, even though she runs around like a kitten. Just like people, pets show age when they've lived a very long time. That is no indication that they're not taken care of or dirty or ill-groomed. On the contrary, it's generally a sign of good care when your pets live to be old.
The Bidens clearly love and care for their dogs. But just like Obama's tan suit, when the right wing hacks don't have anything substantive to pick on, they'll manufacture outrage about something else.

(6,232 posts)Genital as any house pet could be. Youngsters would wrestle with him on the floor. We never saw him growl or bare his teeth. His size was enough to afford protection to the kids playing in the yard.
One of my favorite memories was, my dad always took Brandy with him when running errands. Brandy would lay on the back seat out of sight and not heard. Dad was making a late-night run to a drug store for some OTC cold meds. When he pulled up to a drugstore parking space, a handful of teenagers stood in the only available parking spot. My dad rolled down his window and said, hey guys can you move up to the sidewalk. They got defiant and started banging on the hood and circling the car. Dad looked over his shoulder and said, Brandy. Brandy sat up and stuck his nose out the partially open window next to by dads head. The response was immediate. Jesus Christ!!! He's got an attack dog yelled one kid. The "gang" dispersed, tripping and falling over each other to escape the "attack dog". The attack dog was hoping to get his nosed scratched and maybe get a treat!
Brandy was one great pet. He has been gone for years but still remembered.

(2,042 posts)Champ is almost as old as our beloved GSD Sally was when we had to let her go.
Her face was completely white and she walked a little carefully like Champ does. We still thought she was very beautiful and she was certainly loved and happy. If anyone had dared suggest we werent talking care of her, they would have been very sorry after I finished with them.
Those fuckers
ETA, there is something very special about an old dog. We are privileged if we are allowed a long history with them. They become even more loving and sweet. And, you know in the back of your mind that their time is short and theyll soon be taking your heart with them. So you have to love them even more.

(815 posts)This republican hack is so desperate to attack Biden (who coincidentally is doing fantastic in the polls these days) that he criticizes the appearance of his very elderly German shepherd? We just lost our elderly German shepherd in May and I can tell you that Champ looks great and is in much better shape that most shepherds that reach that advanced age. Plus, look at how faded and blurred Champ (and the background) is in that photo. It's not even a true representation of what he looks like.
It's just disgusting how low these people will go to denigrate a loyal, beautiful, and obviously much loved furry family member of the Bidens.
