for one of our businesses from TX. The company we buy it from is in North Carolina but the raw product used to make our foam is made in TX. They were limping along as it was because of Covid and the state’s dismal preparation and reaction to the pandemic. February’s storm shut the whole thing down. They still aren’t up and running. I am a week from not being able to fill orders in our shop and the phone is ringing off the hook. Texas’ poor planning is now hurting my family business and it’s about to blow up for thousands of businesses nation wide.

We spray liquid polyurethane foam into molds to make artificial rock panels that I sell to taxidermists, museums, retail installation fabricators, landscapers...folks that want the look of real rock without the weight of real rock. We also own a taxidermy shop. The animal forms used in that industry are also made of foam. The companies that make those forms are already unable to fill orders.

The construction industry is booming right now and any of those companies that use spray foam for insulation are going to hit a wall really soon if they haven’t already. The hot tub industry? They use a ton of foam to insulate hot tubs...they’re out of luck too. This won’t be pretty if TX can’t get their shit together. I’m angry about it if you can’t tell. I’ve been calling every chemical company I can think of to try and source material elsewhere but it turns out that the base chemical in polyurethane foam is polyol and it is made in China and Texas. Damn.
