How highways make traffic worse

Expanding highways doesn't do what you think it does.

It's like adding more bookshelves because you have "too many" books. Things are better for a short while, but the fact is this: Book collections GROW AND GROW to fill the amount of shelf space that's provided for them.

1. Never thought about highways like this, but this article makes damn sense and

valid points ... more and more highways means more and more traffic going to places elsewhere, thus causing more congestion across the entire area, not just in the highways, since more and more people can race to downtown areas or other areas where the infrastructure hasn't kept up w/ the increased flow into their areas, thus overwhelming normal traffic flows, thus causing yet more infrastructure build outs, in order to handle the heavier traffic. Seems like they're just shipping the congestion elsewhere in effect.

2. Roads with lights have less traffic during rush hour

because the lights can space it out. Working from home has been excellent for multi-hour commuters.
