who've diligently repaid their student loans over the years? Tough luck for them, everybody else gets a free ride now? Yeah, a free ride is nice, but it teaches you nothing about personal responsibility and having a stake in your own future. It's a 50-50 proposition. There are good things and bad things for each side of the argument.

1. The reason that Elizabeth Warren is out there is that the relief is going to be less than 50K - perhaps a lot less.

2. People who have paid off their loans, are less likely to have endured the cost of todays fees.

3. The way you have phrased it suggests it is a contest between the diligent, and those who would shirk responsibility. The problem that argument is there is another burden - the cost to society of graduates forced to seek the highest paying jobs, rather than following their vocation, or giving something back in public service, or to their communities, or to private enterprises who exercise more social responsibility than a hedge fund. This is an invisible cost to the individual and the public, but it is real. Every teacher who decides to do something else, because it pays more - represents a loss to everyone.

4. There is going to be some assistance for child care. Does that mean parents will come back and say - I paid for all my kids child care. Why should why should there be free ride? No of course they won't. The underlying objection is why should ppl get a free ride to earn big bucks? And then we are back at 3.

5. So my question is - supposing the package reduces the debt burden to something like the levels of 15 years ago - would that be less offensive?

there's good and bad points on both sides of the issue. You've painted a picture of everyone having lofty goals, and getting an education for the benefit of everyone. Sadly, very few people are getting degrees so they can be social workers, although those people do exist. For them there should be some sort of program that reduces their outstanding student loan for their community service. Like the Job Corp program in reverse for College grads.q
Not everyone has such lofty goals. Should we give some little greed-head 50k forgiveness of student debt so he can become a stock broker or the next Ken Lay? No, we shouldn't. I'm against any blanket student loan forgiveness.
Your opinion obviously differs, and that's alright. Trying to get Congress to pass legislation for blanket student loan forgiveness is a pipe dream, though. A program that offers debt forgiveness for specified occupations, even for short durations, has more of a chance of passing.
There has to be a happy medium somewhere.

because I don't think I have the authority to do it by signing with a pen."

What he has said is that he will write off more if Congress brings it to him on a Bill.

Biden thinks student loan debt relief is up to Congress.

As I said at the outset, I believe the reason EW is out there campaigning is that she wants Biden to cancel more than $10K by executive order.

Same as those who went at night part time, used savings, or attended local lower cost colleges while living at home.
