(2,065 posts)Mainly, what these Republican lawmakers are objecting to is the fact that America is quickly becoming a nation in which white people don't hold the keys to power any more, due to shifting demographic changes in the electorate that are beyond their power to stop. And let's not forget that the Republican Party is basically the party of angry and xenophobic white people now.
The Republicans could have done the hard work of reinventing their conservative message to appeal to a broader ethnic base of people, but instead, they took the easy way out, through restrictive voter ID laws, vote purging, voter suppression, gerrymandering, and a whole host of other questionable and deceitful tactics. They even called in Russian help in 2016 and 2020. When even that didn't work in the last presidential election, they resorted to this kind of brazen power grab. All the allegations of election fraud just amount to a tiny, thin fig leaf to cover up this naked, racist power grab.
Heck - even if Republicans in congress adapted and opened themselves up to being in favor of what the majority of Republican voters want, the situation would be a lot better, and a lot more bipartisan. But let's face it - they're just whores to their billionaire and corporate donors now, and are very much estranged from their voting base. In order to get any support at all from the vast majority of self identified Republican voters, they have to brainwash them into voting against their own economic and self interest.
This is so, so SAD! The Republican Party truly deserves to go the way of the dinosaurs, with a new and better party taking their place.
