Part and parcel to Movement Conservatism is the belief that those "on your side" who can't get with the program are quislings that need to be brought to heel or eliminated. And to do that they won't hesitate to slander, fearmonger, scandalmonger, and undermine the election process, because the end (power and control) justifies the means.

It's what they did to the Rockefeller Republicans in the 70s and 80s, and the ever-widening definition of "RINO" ever since.

More than a few had a sneaking admiration for the Bolsheviks, a fairly small group that gained total power through ruthlessness and bringing all rivals heel or eliminating them. Even more of them admire various dictators, who did much the same if mostly on a smaller scale.

A lot of things that I had been taught were things the Soviets did and that's why they were bad, like torture and nakedly rewriting history, were made policy under Republican administrations.
