(2,690 posts)It stood for values expressed in the Declaration of Independence. Yeah, the young rebel nation tolerated the enslavers because, as BJ said we either stand together [against the most powerful country in Europe0 or we will surely hang separately.
That other rebel flag stood for buying and selling people, actual human beings, and selling them and/or their children, so a white enslaver could get out his cotton and other crops and make a lot of money. Without paying the laborers. Without even pretending to give the laborers dignity.

(66 posts)and working for a State Agency, is embarrassing to me when someone asks why I am off on this particular day. Mississippi recognizes Confederate Memorial Day on the last Monday of April.
This year, a city decided not to acknowledge the "Holiday" and opted to give their workers Good Friday off instead. I remember when Tator Tot Reeves' first order of business as governor, was signing the declaration for this day. Ugh.

(8,282 posts)They would call us damn Yankees but oddly enough, they rejected religion and had liberals redneck views. Knowing my ancestry, theres a good possibility that Trae is a distant cousin once or twice removed...love ya buddy! Makes me laugh every time!

(17,911 posts)If your family is like mine, it started at the end of WW2. Some returning vets went north to find work, some of their brothers stayed south. I have an entire wing of the family in Michigan and Ohio due to two brothers who went to work for GM after the war, one brother stayed south and followed my grandfather in the family biz and a sister, my mom, who married a vet, originally from the north, who found work down south. One aspect of WW2 overlooked sometimes.
