Democrats are addicted to the whole bipartisan thing like those with opioid addictions are addicted to opioids. Bipartisan is the opioid of the Democratic masses, and their legislators. We may not know every lurid detail regarding the full extent of the violence and lawlessness that happened on January 6th, but certain facts are crystal clear. How are you able to have a bipartisan commission when the de facto leader of the Republican Party is guilty as heck of starting that insurrection? I don't think that any additional details we could uncover in a commission would change that fact. The Republican party has become nothing more than an authoritarian personality cult, and they are protecting / covering for their "dear leader" in opposing this commission. Sure, Kevin McCarthy may have worked out all the details of how a bipartisan commission on January 6th would proceed, but then he got a call from Mar a Lago and Don Corleone - and maybe terrible threats against the Republican legislators to hold them in line as well. Who knows what goes on behind the scenes where Don the mob boss is concerned?

Perhaps the Democrats should proceed solo, explaining to the American public that they made all sincere efforts possible to reach a bipartisan deal on this commission, but at the last moment the Republicans backed out, probably for political reasons - and then proceed regardless. When one party has stepped totally out of line and is totally beyond the pale of any kind of bipartisanship that is the usual norm for a democracy, you gotta have the guts to proceed solo.
