The far-right Murdoch echo chamber cheers when a young woman gets shot in the head. Something is seriously wrong.

so there will be no help from that quarter.

What needs to happen is going to have to come from governments willing to break up the stranglehold Google and FB have on much of the net, complete with feedback loops that Murdoch et al. have been exploiting for the last two decades. That's the real problem, not "news" reported without fact checking and with the maximum in loaded language.

Don't expect businessmen to clean up their acts, that has never really happens. Government intervention is going to be vital, which is one reason we're hearing the words "antitrust laws" these days.
