What an interesting and informative interview with Gavin Newsom

I've always liked Gavin Newsom, but he is far more impressive than I realized. What he (and Jerry Brown before him) has done for California is incredible. Video is worth watching.

but yes, he does a really good interview. Low key and unobtrusive, no longwinded questions. He left his ego at the door and let Newsom do most of the talking. A good interview should never be about the interviewer. Maybe I like Brian Cohen better than I thought.

I generally avoid reading the comments on such videos, but surprisingly, most of them were very reasonable and supportive.

I lived through the Gray Davis recall election and it really was totally absurd. Republicans and corporate interests use the ballot initiative system in ways that are underhanded and misleading. When they don't win elections, they try to undo them. It is a costly process and very little good ever comes from it.

I remember being bombarded with pamphlets and flyers that often made no sense. Finally a lawyer told my son, whenever in doubt, just vote "no". That turned out to be good advice, as most of the initiatives were financed by special interests and most of what they said was intentionally confusing. I remember them claiming that Prop 8 was about education and/or freedom of speech - it was about same sex marriage.

8. They don't need a reason - California's recall system is from 1900's

It only asks for 10 or 12% of the voters signatures and there doesn't have to be any underlying criminal or corrupt behavior by person being recalled. "I don't like them because they're a democrat" is good enough.

I'm really mad that our legislature left this issue on the table, knowing full well how simple it would be for republicans to pay enough people to go out and get signatures.

BTW, at first they didn't get enough signatures within the timeframe, but took it before a (right wing) judge to ask for more time which was granted.

any chance of winning the governorship is try this deeply flawed recall move. The've trie it on every Democratic governor since Gray Davis, who they successfully recall and installed Arnold.

They tried in 2015 against Jerry Brown but the weren't successful

Republicans have no chance at the governorship otherwise as they're outnumber by more than 2-ro-1 percent in the electorate..

This podcast provides an excellent overview of how Republicans have gamed California's loose recall rules to try to avoid popular Democracy. The goal is to trigger low turnout, off-schedule elections to limit access by voters.

I remember when he was the mayor of San Francisco and we were so impressed with him. He has been an incredible governor. Yes, in the political realm, he truly is a "rock star".

Too bad our right wing corporate news media is so focused on shredding Biden. This guy deserves some prime time exposure.

I haven't seen much about Newsom on the mainstream news in quite awhile, aside from the recall. He definitely is a voice that needs to be heard.
