15. As I mentioned in another thread, I read Tammy Duckworth's book over the summer...

She writes very movingly about the school lunch program in Hawai’i, where as it happens we both grew up. Although she is younger than me, her memories are much the same as mine: everybody paid the same for the lunch, the price was so low even my own mother admitted she couldn't pack a sack lunch for that cost, it was nourishing and made at the school, and it was designed to be 1/3 of the daily calorie needs for a growing kid.

Very few families couldn’t manage the very low cost, but arrangements could be made. Nobody, but nobody, was ever singled out and shamed.
