The state of West Virginia has been suffering and declining, and endured exploitation and neglect for far too long, time's up. "Don't make me go West Virginia on you!"

(32,754 posts)That calls himself the geography king. Oh my...one of his clips was about the hills and hollers of WV. I looked at that and thought this could be Nogales, Mexico. Shacks, no heat, no running water or electricity..I mean Manchin ought to be so ashamed to further deny these ppl any help. They live in less than what we would call substandard conditions!

(41,118 posts)have been extreme for generations. Previous efforts of the FDR and LBJ administrations to call attention to the desperate, appalling conditions in WV brought some assistance, economic opportunity and relief.
Years later and in these times Manchin has become a disgrace to the people of West Virginia, the nation and the Democratic Party.
The demise of the coal industry, a monoculture has been steady for 50 years. Some newer ventures have grown up in the state recently to try to fill in and stimulate economic activity such as getaway 'retreats,' mountain style homes and a small recreation/tourism industry centered round outdoor sports.
But will these new endeavors make a dent overall given the major loss of employment and other problems. And the poverty, will it combat it to any significant degree?
Improving the rampant lack of jobs, poverty and drug addiction should have begun years ago, a heavy lift that will require major assistance from government and business. Tech companies, the biggest thing around have no interest in setting up operations there of course- looking at you Amazon.
> Logan County where Richard Ojeda hails from is known for having some of the toughest mountaineers and rugged people around. I admire his passion and spirit.
In August, 1921, Logan was the site of the largest labor uprising in US history. 10,000 miners fed up with the abysmal work conditions and the system led the 'Battle of Blair Mountain' against 3,000 law enforcement and mine officials. They didn't succeed but they made a fierce stand.
Don't mess with those folks I tell you, and I know whereof I speak!
