is choosing party over nation from a combination of a sense of misplaced loyalty and cold cynical political calculation.
I believe he did the right thing on 1/6 despite his weakness more than because of his strength.

I believe he did "the right thing" simply because he had no choice. He's a follower, not a leader. I watched that VP debate and nothing he said were words of his own. He was just repeating TFG opinions and what he'd been told. Ironically, that's why TFG put up with him for 4 years. He "fired" anyone else who dared disagree with him. Pence did what he was told, he's gotten used to it.
