Monologue: The 70's All Over AgainBill recaps the top stories of the week, including supply chain shortages, mental health issues, and Donald Trump's new social network.
Andrew Yang & John McWhorter on Dave Chappelle and "Transphobia"
Andrew Yang and John McWhorter join Bill Maher to discuss the uproar over Dave Chappelle's latest comedy special and the dangers of not adhering to the "One True Opinion" on trans issues.
New Rule: Time for a National Divorce
If we want to halt this descent into civil war, we have to stop hating each other.
Here's a "bootleg" version of the show which includes the entire interview with Saru Jayaraman (8:21), entire panel discussion with Andrew Yang and John McWhorter (18:10), Bill's "Funny Bit" (31:34), and includes the opening part of New Rules (45:57). It won't last long, as usual:

(255,533 posts)I was just thinking, did you ever think of publishing a collection of your brilliant creations? It would be a best seller - especially here!

This year, I've been able to get it in HD and with good sound every week.
In years past, it was difficult to get the whole show from YT because it would be quickly removed after someone uploaded it.
This year, it's as if they gave up on trying to police it.
Could it be that Bill Maher is no longer a big ratings draw, so they give it away?
Hi Rhiannon. Thanks as always for posting.

(255,533 posts)It used to be posted here with the warning that the video wouldn't last long and that's when I started posting the "official" segments. But recently they started offering just clips, so that's when I started adding the "bootleg" recordings. And I did find a "better" copy and added it. Thanks for the suggestion.

(11,971 posts)Actually, many people are streaming the show live on YouTube.

(2,868 posts)until the very end.
Maher mentioned he got a lot of response to his 'Slow-Moving Coup' editorial from last week, with many saying he scared the shit out of them. Bill said, "Good".
I agree. A lot of people think it 'Can't Happen Here', but experts in fascism say that the first indicator of a fascist takeover was a previous failed attempt.
Maher claimed the solution was simply to stop hating each other, but when the fascists took over Germany and Italy, and they then invaded the rest of Europe, the answer was not we have to stop hating each other, the answer was we must fight fascism.
We're watching the fascists in real time taking over Hungary and Poland, and attempting to take over Brazil and the U.S., and the solution is not to stop hating each other, the solution is to fight fascism.

(255,533 posts)Bill may think that his peacemaking speech was a solution, but he has to realize that the TFG supporters and the insurrectionists aren't the ones watching his show...

(33,150 posts)stop hating each other and start using better language. The panel discussion was perhaps the best I've heard in yearsit's all in the phrasing and selling of concepts. Think of it as if you're in the shoes of your audience. That's what advertising people do.
IMO it would also help for Dems to create a unified enemy. Not Democrats vs Republicans but the 99% vs the 1%. The Right promotes the former, the Left needs to promote the latter. Kudos to Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren for their efforts. But everybody needs to be on board.
1) We're already there. Look at the polling on everything in the BBB proposal. They're at 60%, 70%, 80%, and even 90%, but the Corporate Dems are winning, and they're making the Progressive Dems do their dirty work and make the cuts, so they don't leave any fingerprints, yet everything is watered down to a weak tea. Good luck getting turnout in the '22 midterms.
2) What you're suggesting would have zero impact on the Repubs replacing election officials, allowing the legislatures to decide which votes to count and sending alternate slates of electors to the electoral college.

(33,150 posts)It was about messaging. Framing the conversation. Owning and selling relevant issues.
WHITT
(2,868 posts)Unfortunately, it's irrelevant.
If you had whatever you think is perfect 'messaging', and we had record Dem voter turnout, none of it will matter if the fascist nullification legislation enacted by the Repubs isn't overturned.
They're replacing election officials with goose-steppers. The legislatures can determine which votes are 'valid' and which are deemed 'invalid'. They can determine which votes to count or not, and who would trust their count? Then, even if a Dem overcomes all of those barriers, the legislatures can overturn the results of an election for 'fill-in-the-blank' reasons.
The legislatures can also ignore how those pesky citizens voted and send their own slate if goose-steppers to the electoral college.
So, as admirable as your noble agenda may be, it simply just doesn't matter.

(33,150 posts)It needed to happen 10 years ago. We all saw it.
Still think the Dems could salvage some seats but they need full support of DNC. Maybe we clone several Stacey Abrams???
WHITT
(2,868 posts)I'd settle for the DNC creating a national position for her to oversee GOTV in numerous states, each with their own Abrams Mini-Mes.
