(205,679 posts)We've had numerous outbreaks in so many schools around here despite the mask mandate since last year - and know it's even worse elsewhere. Just hoping that the rest of the parents step up to keep kids, teachers and staff safe!

(205,679 posts)We've had numerous breakouts in local schools even though there has been a mask mandate in effect since last year for in school and on school buses. Making the vaccine available for younger kids would certainly be a big part of the solution. The only impediment s going to be in those states where angry parents - and irresponsible governors - are opposed to any Covid prevention precautions.

(57,073 posts)There are ~110K students in the Memphis system, the largest district in the state.
Even with mask mandate & a $14 million air purification system installed in every school, over 20K kids have been infected.
Statewide, 27 educators have died 9f covid since mid-August when this school year began!
So, yes, vacccinatng kids is a big piece of the puzzle!

(205,679 posts)When I took my brother o get his second Pfizer back in May, I saw a couple of young teens there with their Moms getting vaccinated. I really hope all the school kids take advantage when it's available. We also have anti-vaxxers in these parts, though at least there's now a vaccine mandate at the local hospital. The two friends I have who work there got the Pfizer back in January, but one of them told me that those still unvaccinated only had till the end of September to get it.

(205,679 posts)I've seen even the youngest kids getting off the bus still wearing masks. They're used to it by now. And it's no big deal for them as long as everyone's wearing one. The only difference they made this year is that masks are no longer required for outdoor activities. I wish they'd extend the vaccine mandate to schools, but I'm not holding my breath...

I wish they would extend it to every school! All colleges & universities whose students accept fmFed financial aid or loans. Stop the flow of $$$$$$ if they don't comply! 👍

(205,679 posts)Last year they shut down state universities here after only two weeks and sent everyone home because the students violated policies against gatherings and so many got Covid! My college had a solid plan in place, students were placed in "pods," no visitors allowed. But that plan must have failed, too, since when I looked again, the school was completely shut down, including staff.
