I'm pretty sure it's an act, but why one would wish to be viewed as an ignorant buffoon is a bit perplexing.

(47,399 posts)but like many other republicans, Cruz has learned that absurdity sells with the crazed Trump base.
I think there is no doubt that Cruz has always been a thoroughly unlikable opportunist, but he isn't stupid. He graduated from Princeton and Harvard and he clerked for William Rehnquist, when he was Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Smarts he has, scruples none whatsoever. Also he is a terrible actor, but the base doesn't seem to notice.

(338 posts)... and based its manned-mission control center in Houston. Actually, that happened in the days when Democrats controlled the state and LBJ, a former U.S. senator from Stonewall, was president. Indeed, the center was renamed for him after he died in '73. Presumably, Teddy and the Cruzers will want to rename the facility again -- Cruz Space Center sounds catchy, dontcha think? And they will have to rename NASA the Texas Aeronautics and Space Administration, and then the seceded state can beg the U.S. government to keep funding both the center and the state in general And by the way, the Cruz reference is doubly dumb, in that NASA headquarters are not in Texas. Texas does have a lot of military bases, but the new Independent Dominion of Don't Mess With Us will presumably have to start paying for all those operations or close the bases down, as they'll be useless when the U.S. government moves all the troops to bases in the surviving U.S.

(338 posts)Crammed with computers and electronic communications gear, sure, but the operation could be recreated anywhere and in a modest amount of time. Look how quickly and economically SpaceX set up its manned mission control center. Pretty much off the shelf. In fact, it's really the skilled NASA people who make that place special and they'd be free to move. Unless the breakaway stateO would like to uh, hold those U.S. citizens under house arrest. But the new republic of Ted-ax still wouldn't have NASA launch facilities and other existing, supporting infrastructure already located outside Lonestar borders. Or NASA funding. It's stupid, nonsensical bluster.

(100,063 posts)Texas would lose a hell of a lot if they seceded (military and Congressional representation, any government funds and subsidies, and all assets that are owned by the US government) and defected from the US, not to mention the US would declare them a territory with hostile intent.
That's not how it would work. NASA would be a American enclave landlocked by the Republic of Texas, as would other major USG installations, e.g., military bases.
But sure, Ted, by all means we expect to see you on the front lines carrying the confederate battle flag and ready to shed your blood in the ensuing battles. But, as the south did in the Civil War, you will lose, and then it's no more nice Mr. Northern States.
