(2,496 posts)Men in general, and especially guys like Rittenhouse, are programed not to show vulnerability, especially crying. Older men generally don't care as much, but for a kid his age it is total taboo. If a guy is overcome with emotion he will do everything he can to suppress it. He will slow his breathing, look down and, if necessary, stop talking. He will try to control his body so it doesn't shake (although the shaking may happen anyway), and try not to let his breathing pattern give him away. In a casual situation he will try to change the subject, and maybe leave the room. The one thing he can't control is tears.
What we see with Rittenhouse is the opposite. There is no effort to suppress his emotions. On the contrary he is trying work himself up into the emotion. He does a lot of blubbering and sobbing, which is exactly what guys would not do. They'd hide that shit, turn their face and turn away before they'd let those noises come out. And with Rittenhouse there's barely a single tear.
As an actor I can say this is bad acting and bad coaching.

(24,284 posts)I completely agree with you, and I have faith the jury will see it the same way.

(2,496 posts)all this play acting. Unfortunately, many people are just looking for an excuse to do what they think they are expected to do.

(24,284 posts)of a murder trial where self-defense was claimed. There was no video, no eyewitnesses and the weapon was a large hand-held rock. The defendant testified for several days. There was video of him being interviewed by police twice before he spoke to a lawyer.
Those are a few details, but the point I want to make was trickery from both the prosecutor and defense were tried. And the jury was not fooled by any of it. They saw through it all and reached the right decision. As an alternate I was not involved in the deliberations, but I spoke to several juors after the trial and I was impressed with the analysis done by ordinary everyday people. It gave me great faith in the jury system. I hope it holds true here.
