(10,865 posts)buckle down and get out of school ASAP. He uses the loans to live on and only takes the minimum classes to qualify. Now is a great time to graduate with so many jobs available - that is not always the case. In the 70's there were PHDs driving taxi because there were not many jobs available.
The best way to eliminate debt is not to get it in the first place.

(73,726 posts)if someone pledges to tackle a problem on the campaign trial, and you take that as a promise, that's on you when you are disappointed. that's not how this works. he isnt the king.
it's in the bill, he and the dems in congress are doing everything they can.
if you dont know why it isnt getting done, i dont think you are paying close enough attention.
sorry you have to keep paying while this gets straightened out, but forgive me for thinking this is in line behind a lot of more pressing problems. like, ya know, the plague, or kids drinking tainted water and wrecking their brains, or addressing maternal mortality, people getting thrown out of their homes. and democracy.

It's tragic.

(2,113 posts)I'm thinking President Biden's plate is more than a little full, despite all of the things he and the Dems have accomplished in less than ONE YEAR of his FOUR YEAR TERM...
But yeah, sure, please go on about how you have to start making payments again on money you borrowed, under the same terms under which you borrowed it when you signed on the dotted line.

(7,811 posts)..... Bidens promised agenda. He has to fight with members of his own party to pass his agenda.
Don't forget in the next election you could vote for the republicans if you think they are a better choice.

THAT is how it's done.
His initial promise there is $10,000 relief, and various other methods of relief THROUGH LEGISLATION, not "the stroke of a pen" as several members of Congress are claiming he can do.

(67,782 posts)Student Loans
Since becoming president, Biden has cancelled more than $11.5 billion of student loan debt, which is the most of any president. This includes:
$5.8 billion of student loan cancellation for student loan borrowers with a total and permanent disability;
$1.5 billion of student loan cancellation for student loan borrowers who were misled by their college or university and got student loan forgiveness through borrower defense to repayment;
$4.5 billion of student loan cancellation for student loan borrowers seeking public service loan forgiveness, including $1.7 billion automatic student loan cancellation and at least $2.8 billion of additional student loan cancellation.
Latest student loan forgiveness: the details
To date, Biden has used existing student loan forgiveness programs to enact student loan forgiveness. This has included, for example, student loan forgiveness of federal student loans through borrower defense to repayment as well as total and permanent disability.
Bidens latest student loan forgiveness, however, major changes to student loan cancellation for public servants. These major changes to student loan forgiveness include:
which student loan payments count toward student loan forgiveness;
which types of student loans should count for student loan forgiveness;
which employers qualify for student loan forgiveness;
when student loan payments start counting for student loan forgiveness
And lots more.

I wish people would STOP falsely claiming that Biden has done nothing, has proposed nothing additional, or promised to forgive ALL student loan debt.

(179,869 posts)Here are some more facts on this issue https://www.npr.org/2021/12/07/1062070001/student-loan-forgiveness-debt-president-biden-campaign-promise
Total and permanent disability discharge: In August, Education Secretary Miguel Cardona announced that the department would erase the federal student debts of thousands of borrowers with permanent disabilities. A 2019 NPR investigation found that, even though eligible borrowers have been legally entitled to a full discharge of their loans, the process was so complicated that fewer than half were able to shed their debts. The latest data from the Education Department suggests that these changes will help at least 370,000 borrowers drop more than $6.5 billion in student debts.
Borrower defense and closed-school discharge: The Biden administration has dramatically expanded efforts to help students who have been defrauded by for-profit colleges and/or whose schools have been forced to close. Defrauded students who previously filed "borrower defense" claims but were given only partial relief under Trump administration rules will now see the rest of their federal student loans discharged.
Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF): The program meant to forgive borrowers' debts after 10 years of public service and steady loan payments has been notoriously stingy, with complex rules and serial mismanagement pushing out many eligible borrowers. In October, though, the department used its expanded pandemic authority to retroactively loosen those rules and give borrowers credit for disqualified loan payments. According to the department, the overhaul has already forgiven $2 billion in debts.
Through these efforts, the Education Department says it has discharged or is in the process of discharging roughly $12.7 billion in student debt, affecting more than 638,000 borrowers.

(15,556 posts)My son and DIL both have student loans and are eligible for loan forgiveness. DIL had several loans (total $30,000) and was told by the US Dept of Education to consolidate her loans after she'd been paying on them for 3 years. She specifically asked if consolidation would start the clock over and was told "no, you will get credit for the 3 years you already paid". Once she did as instructed and consolidated her loans, they told her the 3 years she paid before consolidation did not count toward the 10 years she needs to pay to get forgiveness. She called and wrote and complained and while they admitted she had been given misinformation (to consolidate and it wouldn't start the clock over) DOE couldn't do anything but follow the rules and not allow the payments to count against the 10 years. She tried under Obama and Trump to fix it and could not.
Biden gets elected.
DOE contacts her out of the blue and say what happened to her was wrong and she was getting credit for the 3 years' of payments. She also got nearly 2 years of payment forgiveness during Covid and she will hit the 10 year mark before payments begin again in Feb 2022.
Both of them sing the praises of Biden, and said Obama hadn't done as much to help them as Biden had. And of course Trump didn't help.
