(71,926 posts)I also think the mockery of it and the holding of it to ridicule is unseemly and wrong.

(31,493 posts)We here at DU also mock and condemn other cults like the Westboro church moron clan and plenty of wackos from the fake christian cult leaders such as Pat the Robberson ...Jerry Fellwell (good by asshole) ...Warren Jeffs Mormon LDS leader (child molester) ...and there are many more. You are welcome to call this unseemly and wrong and I don't care what you think about it. Alert on this and find out for yourself. No religion is above criticism here and shouldn't be. Poisonous toxic religious mind control is no laughing matter.

(71,926 posts)I believe in free speech as well as the right to practice or not practice religion as is your wont. What I question is the ethos involved in ridiculing folks because one doesn't understand the belief system involved. Ever mock a Wiccan? What goes on in the temple is closed except to folks with temple recommend and you'd never know about it let alone be affected by it either way if someone with ulterior motives didn't sneak in and record it. I know how I felt as an SDS member and Moratorium organizer when police were known to attend and record meetings I was at. Again, situational ethics is a slippery slope and when we adopt the methods of the enemy we become the enemy.

(31,493 posts)When you are running for POTUS you will be examined and if what you believe is shaped by a cult then that is a factor to be considered in who you would vote for.
...and SDS was/is hardly a religion or cult.

(71,926 posts)no degree at all. All that umbrage over life must take a lot of the juice out of living. To even know what they do do or think takes stealth and methods that if the government did the same to you or your social set would be clear violation your civil rights and the law. Situational ethics is a slippery slope.
AtheistCrusader
(33,982 posts)Nor would it be a violation of the law for the government to observe them by clandestine means. It might not be admissible evidence in a court of law, but they could keep tabs on them. In fact, I can guarantee they do. Hell, they infiltrate and observe (sometimes even crossing the line to illegal collection of evidence) against peaceful anti-war demonstrators.
That church has no expectation of privacy against a MEMBER that wishes to show the world what is going on inside.
The CCC
(463 posts)Actually they do have an expectation of privacy. Attendance at any (Church/Synagog/Mosque/what have you)is by invitation only. Some are very open as to invitees. Some less so. The Mormons are very open about their regular church meetings, all are invited. Their Temples are different. Being allowed in is conditional on belief/behavior and is by written invitation only.
AtheistCrusader
(33,982 posts)An expectation of privacy from a member? Do I have that right?

(71,926 posts)privacy if the Supreme Court has ruled (and it has) that a locked glove box or a closed drawer gives the owner an expectation of privacy in an unwarranted search. Wouldn't you consider your sealed envelope an expectation of privacy from my prying eyes even though I am no agent of the government? Do I have the right to tell everybody about your antibiotic regimen to treat your hypothetical syphilis on Facebook disclosed in that sealed envelope?
I am no fan of the LDS except for a couple of things: they pay taxes on church property claiming no religious exemptions (except the draft) and the they discourage their members from taking state help offering a church welfare system and jobs through the their bishops and the Bishops Storehouses that they offer to nonmembers, too - without any religious pressures.
Somehow nasty comment is not the same as constructive criticism and that's my opinion. You disagree. No problem.
AtheistCrusader
(33,982 posts)you didn't have any expectation of privacy. If you did, you wouldn't have shown it to them. This is no different than a police officer asking for access, and you GRANT it.
They MAY have a contractual beef with the member over the filming. I doubt it, but they might. That would be their only recourse.
Point me to the 'nasty comment'.

(71,926 posts)any which way you want. This is the equivalent of a Brietbach operation but I am sure you're OK with that, too. Reply if want but I am done with it. Explain how germane it is to the election while you're at it.
AtheistCrusader
(33,982 posts)Reverend Wright. People are understandably curious about the Mormon church, since it forms so much of Romney's worldview (in his own estimate).
I am extremely curious what all this 'secret' bullshit is, and this video sheds some light on that.
Their practices are extremely interesting to see. For instance, it speaks to how credulous Romney is.
progressoid
(53,179 posts)However, this video does neither. It simply shows exactly what is happening inside the church.

(31,493 posts)On the Road
(20,783 posts)Makes it very, very real. We don't know the source for certain, but it looks and sounds like a surreptitious recording. The style and atmosphere seems consistent with the Mormon Temple in Kensington, MD.
I do think there's a difference between Mormonism and most, if not all, Christian churches. What Romney came out of is much less compatible with the presidency than, say, Kennedy's Catholicism or Carter's Baptist roots.

(33,982 posts)I'm guessing most religions have this sort of stuff, if you look deep enough under the covers.

(2,691 posts)have the same two things in common. Power and money. Religion has been the curse of the world for centuries. My god is better than your god, and if you don't follow my god I'll kill you.
The CCC
(463 posts)Considering how much of the middle of 20th Century was dominated by Atheistic tyrants. Religion comes off looking pretty good.

(649 posts)faith is a sickness, infecting weak minded people, clinging to fairy-tales like small children. People need to deal with reality not astronaut "gods" and secret handshakes,. damn!

(1,269 posts)Then there's the bit about how Mormons feel that if you are rich 'God' ordained it to be so. So wtf!
Never mind how many poor people it takes to make a rich one and the conscious choice to enable that equation.
