Back here at reality, if she was black and shoplifting, what are the chances she would have been thrown in jail, or WORSE???

(1,296 posts)Why are we allowing our fellow citizens to be so poor that they need to shoplift things as basic as a hat and gloves? Why are we allowing our fellow citizens to be homeless?
This country has its priorities screwed up. The Largest Military In The World© doesn't count for shit when there are people suffering in the cold.
And don't even get me started on our tax code, with its numerous loopholes for the super-rich.
Presently, the income inequality in this country is worse than it was in the American colonies before the revolution, and it's very close to what it was in France just before their revolution.
Do I hear tumbrels? Just food for thought.

(4,552 posts)We have money for our massive defense operations and socialist corporate welfare. Yet we are unable to help the homeless.
But the right insists we are a Christian nation.
Christ did not ask us to help the poor.
He demanded we help the poor.
He said nothing about judging the poor.
He was very clear about who would do the judging.
Good job officer.

(7,370 posts)I don't believe for ONE SECOND that "Jesus Christ" is anything but a myth.
But you know what?
I agree completely with your sentiment.
And EVERY SINGLE TIME I'm in a 7-11, or a Quick Trip convenience store, and I'm waiting in line while someone struggles counting pennies to pay for their stuff, I step forward and pay it for them. I do it because I am as sick as you that the Reich wing, mostly rich assholes, vilify the poor as if it's their own fault. I do it because I can afford it and maybe, just maybe I can help be the change we need to see in this country if we are to survive as a society.
If we can spend nearly a $Trillion dollars EVERY YEAR on war-making, we can certainly make sure our kids don't go hungry, our single mothers can raise their families without fear, our homeless can have shelter, and our elders are able to live out their lives in dignity.
It's not that hard. Just takes courage.

Some of us do not need help.
