I visited the USSR before it fell, went with my grandmother's peace group. Things were looking up then for the Russian people under Gorbachev's policies of Glasnost and Perestroika, openness and transparency. We visited what was then Soviet Georgia and there were numerous statues of Stalin, whose policies were obviously out of favor, so I asked why. And I was told that the Georgian people revered Stalin (who was Georgian)) since he killed so many Russians.
